Boeing Executive Joins Non-Profit Education Researcher’s Board of Directors
MIND Research Institute draws on John P. Bishop’s aerospace expertise to shape its math education programs that prepare children for future science and engineering careers
Long Beach, Oct. 2, 2007 – The non-profit education researcher MIND Research Institute, based in Santa Ana, named Boeing executive John P. Bishop as a new member of its Board of Directors. Bishop, a Huntington Beach resident, will represent Boeing, which has supported MIND’s mathematics education program for the last five years. With a vested interest in generating a workforce pipeline of students who are academically prepared to enter science and engineering careers, Boeing has donated more than $50,000 toward MIND’s ST Math+Music™ program. The funds were for the professional development part of the program, which trains teachers how to use MIND’s visual math software in their classrooms.
Like MIND Research, Bishop, who is vice president of prototyping operations and supplier management for Boeing Advanced Systems, understands the importance of developing strong math skills and confidence, a must for science and engineering fields. Bishop leads a team that turns advanced engineering concepts into prototype products to test ideas and understand potential capabilities, a process that involves plenty of math.
During his career with Boeing, Bishop applied his math skills to successfully streamline the supply system for major programs that the company provided to the world’s air forces, as well as supporting the first flights of unmanned air vehicle programs. He has participated on Industry Advisory Boards with Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and the University of California, Irvine. He is a member of the American Society for Quality and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, on the Board of Directors for the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, and coaches youth basketball.
“Developing math skills in children, who are the future workforce is an important goal for both MIND Research and Boeing,” said Ted Smith, Chairman of the MIND Research Institute Board of Directors. “With John representing Boeing on our Board, we’ll be able to work closely together to provide our unique math programs and enable more students to enter science and engineering careers.”
The MIND Research Institute provides its award-winning math education program, ST Math+Music™, and works with schools throughout California and nationally. The program engages students with MIND’s unique visual math computer games that are proven to help students increase their math test scores. Through the music component of the program, students are taught to read sheet music and play the piano. Both the Spatial Temporal (ST) games, authored by Co-Founder Dr. Matthew Peterson, and the rigorous instrumental music curriculum engage the brain’s innate capacity to recognize patterns and apply them to learning math concepts such as fractions. ST Math+Music also enhances general problem-solving ability for students at all levels of academic and language proficiency.

The MIND Research Institute is a community-based non-profit research organization formed in 1998 and located in Santa Ana, CA. It is dedicated to neuroscience and learning research and to preparing students in grades K-12, regardless of cultural or socio-economic background, for math success in school, work and society. MIND Research has successfully integrated more than 30 years of breakthrough academic research on the brain and learning at the University of California, Irvine, into applied math education programs for elementary school students and recently completed development of an Algebra Readiness curriculum that has been submitted for adoption by the State of California. Student test results at schools that use MIND’s ST Math+Music™ program have shown consistent dramatic improvements in standardized test scores. There are currently over 250 schools in California, Texas and 10 other states, and more than 40,000 students and 2,000 teachers participating in the program. |
